No sign-up, no email
Globby does not ask for an email address, phone number, or password. When you first open the app it creates a random player identifier on your device and keeps it in your device's keychain, synced through iCloud Keychain if you use it, so your progress follows you to a new iPhone signed in to the same Apple Account. Because there is no password, we cannot recover an account if that identifier is lost.
What we collect
| Data | What it is | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Player identifier | A random ID generated on your device | To keep your account and progress |
| Profile | The display name you choose, an avatar emoji and colour, your country, your app language | Shown to friends and opponents; leaderboards by country; localized copy and notifications |
| Gameplay | Answers, scores, streaks, medals, mastery per country, duel results and rating, friends, challenges, and players you block | The game itself: results, leaderboards, the Mastery Map, matchmaking |
| Purchases | Apple's transaction information for Globby Pro and lives refills (not your card details), and a random billing ID that links them to your account | To unlock Pro or deliver a refill on your account and verify the purchase with Apple |
| Device | A per-app device identifier from Apple, your time zone, app version, and when you were last active | To recognise your devices and send reminders at a sensible local hour |
| Push token | The device token Apple issues if you allow notifications | Reminders, duel invites, friend requests and, if you turn them on, news and offers. Optional; see "Notifications" below |
| IP address | Your network address, sent with every request to our servers | To deliver the game and limit abuse. Kept only briefly in rate limits and server logs, not stored with your account |
| Analytics | Which screens and features are used, whether you have Pro, app version, device model, OS version, session length. Tied to your player identifier, never to your name or email | To understand what is played and what breaks |
| Diagnostics | Crash and performance reports from Apple's MetricKit, only if you share analytics with developers in iOS Settings | To fix crashes |
| Feedback | What you type into Send feedback or a report, the category, and optionally an email you enter, plus app version, device model, and OS version | To read and answer your feedback |
We do not collect your precise location, contacts, photos, or health data. Country is what you pick in the app, not a GPS fix.
Your player identifier and gameplay data are needed to provide the game. Everything else is optional: you can play without a custom name, notifications, analytics, or feedback.
Legal basis
Under the GDPR and UK GDPR we need a legal basis for each use of your data. Ours are:
- Contract (providing the game you asked for): your player identifier, profile, device data, gameplay, purchases, and the feedback you send.
- Consent: notifications (through the iOS permission), usage analytics in the EEA and the UK, and the email address you may choose to enter in feedback.
- Legitimate interest (running a stable, fair, and secure game): crash reports (which also need your iOS opt-in), rate limiting and abuse prevention, and usage analytics outside the EEA and the UK, which you can switch off at any time. You can object to this processing; see "Your rights".
- Legal obligation: keeping purchase records for as long as accounting and tax law requires.
The same bases apply where other data-protection laws require one, such as Brazil's LGPD.
We make no decisions with legal or similarly significant effects about you solely by automated means. Matchmaking ratings and answer checks only affect gameplay.
Ads
Globby shows no ads and does not track you across other apps or websites, so Do-Not-Track signals do not change what we collect.
Analytics
Usage analytics are processed on our behalf by an analytics provider on servers in the European Union (Germany). Events are keyed to your player identifier, not to your name. We use them to see which features are used and where players get stuck.
Analytics are optional. In the EEA and the UK they stay off until you allow them, and never run for players who may be under 16. Everywhere else they are on until you switch them off in the app's Settings, and never run for players under 13 (under 14 in South Korea).
This website counts visits through the same provider: the page opened, the site that linked to it, an approximate country and the links clicked. It sets no cookies; a random visit ID stays in your browser only until you close the tab, and your IP address is used only to estimate the country and is not kept. We do this on the basis of our legitimate interest in knowing how people find Globby.
Purchases and refunds
Globby Pro and lives refills are sold through Apple's App Store. Apple handles payment, renewals, cancellations, and refunds; we never receive your card number, billing address, or other payment details. Apple gives us a transaction record for each purchase (product, dates, and Apple's transaction identifiers) so we can verify it, keep Pro unlocked on your account, and deliver what you bought. After you delete your account we keep purchase records without a link to you, to stop the same purchase being delivered twice and for accounting.
We use a purchase-validation provider to receive and check these records. It receives a random billing ID (never your player identifier or name) and basic device and app details. While usage analytics are on, it also receives your analytics identifier, so that subscription events such as renewals, cancellations and refunds are counted in our usage analytics. When you delete your account we delete our link to that billing ID and have the provider delete its record.
Because Apple is the payment processor, we cannot see your payment history or issue refunds. Refunds and cancellations go through Apple; see the Terms of Use.
Notifications
Notifications are optional. iOS asks once whether Globby may send them. They cover duels and friends, the daily reminder, streaks, lives, come-back reminders and, only if you turn them on, news and offers. You can switch each kind off in the app's Settings, or all of them in iOS Settings → Notifications. When Apple tells us a device token no longer works we remove it, and all tokens are deleted with your account.
Who else sees data
- Apple (United States): purchases, push delivery, and, if you opt in, crash diagnostics, under Apple's own privacy policy.
- Analytics provider (European Union, Germany): usage analytics, as described above.
- Purchase-validation provider (United States): purchase records keyed to a random billing ID, as described under "Purchases and refunds".
- Hosting and database providers (European Union, Netherlands and Germany): run our servers and store our data.
- Email provider (United States): messages you send to [email protected].
- Other players: your display name, avatar, country, level, rating, and duel results are visible to friends and opponents and on leaderboards. Your player identifier and any email you enter in feedback are never shown to other players.
These service providers process data only on our behalf and on our instructions, not for their own purposes. You can ask us for their names at [email protected].
We do not sell personal data and we do not share it with data brokers.
Where data is stored
Our servers, database and analytics are in the European Union (Netherlands and Germany). Where a provider can access data from outside the EU, it does so under appropriate safeguards such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses. Purchase records are also processed by our purchase-validation provider in the United States, under the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, and emails you send us are handled by our email provider in the United States. You can ask us for a copy of these safeguards. Apple processes the data described above under its own privacy policy and safeguards, which may include transfers to the United States.
How long we keep it
Account and gameplay data is kept while your account exists. Feedback and reports are kept until you delete your account or ask us to remove them. Server logs and rate-limit records are short-lived and not linked to your account. Crash reports and a few usage counters on our own servers are deleted after 90 days. Analytics events are deleted after 12 months. Purchase records are kept as long as accounting and tax law requires, no longer linked to you after account deletion.
Deleting your account
Open Settings in the app and tap Delete account. This removes your account, profile, scores, streaks, mastery, friends, and leaderboard entries from our servers. It cannot be undone. Your past duels stay in your opponents' match history as "Deleted Player", reports other players filed are kept, and usage analytics expire on their normal schedule (ask us if you want them erased sooner). Details are on the delete your account page. Purchases are managed by Apple and are unaffected; a Globby Pro subscription must be cancelled separately in your Apple Account settings.
Your rights
You can see your profile and stats in the app at any time, change your name, avatar, country, and language, and delete your account as described above. If you are in the EEA, the UK, or another region with data-protection rights, you also have the right to:
- ask what data we hold about you and receive a copy in a portable format;
- have inaccurate data corrected;
- have your data erased, or its use restricted;
- object to processing based on our legitimate interest;
- withdraw consent at any time, for example by turning off analytics in the app's Settings;
- complain to the data-protection authority in your country. The EEA authorities are listed by the European Data Protection Board; in the UK it is the ICO.
To make a request, write to [email protected] or use the app's Send feedback screen, and include your player ID (the six characters after "ID" on the version line at the very bottom of Settings) so we can find your account. We confirm the account is yours before we act on a request; a display name and country are not enough, because every player can see them. We answer within one month, and requests are free unless they are clearly unfounded or excessive.
Children
Globby is made for a general audience. The app asks for your birth year once and never keeps the year itself: we keep only whether you are under 13 (under 14 in South Korea), and the app keeps whether you may be under 16 on your own devices without sending it to us. In the EEA and the UK, players who may be under 16 are never asked for analytics and send none. For these younger players we keep only what is needed to run the game and answer them (player identifier, avatar, country and language, device details, gameplay, purchase records, and any feedback they send us) and turn off analytics, crash reports, notifications, custom names, friends, public leaderboard entries, the feedback email field, and the free-text field in reports. A parent can ask us to see or delete a child's data at [email protected].
Security
Data travels over HTTPS, and your player identifier is kept in your device's keychain (and iCloud Keychain, if you use it), which Apple encrypts. Our systems are access-controlled and hold no payment details. No system is completely secure, but we take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your data.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we will update the date above and, for significant changes, tell you in the app.
